Mira Costa made huge strides throughout the season en route to becoming the second-fastest girls cross country team ever to race at the CIF State Championships behind five-time winner Saugus.
As for their second time competing at the prestigious Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Ore., the Mustangs could only take baby steps.
After a hip injury slowed Savannah Pio at last year's meet, resulting in Mira Costa's 17th-place finish, a pain-free CIF Division II state individual champion produced a better result Saturday on the muddy 5-kilometer course at Portland Meadows.
