After a strong junior track season, where she ran 10:20.11 for 3,200m and won two state titles, Katie Knight (Sr., North Central, WA) is having one heck of a senior cross country season. The North Central standout is fully recovered from a case of mono, which ended her 2012 track season short of the big post-season meets, and is now running stronger than ever.

We caught up with Katie this week, where she talked about her season thus far, the competition of running in Washington State and her college decision.

Scott Bush (SB): You've had a very good start to your season, running some great races thus far. You recently ran the Richland Invitational where your faced some tough competition. Can you talk about that race a little bit and what it meant to take home the win?

Katie Knight (KK): Racing is one of my favorite parts of running cross country and I try and enjoy it every time I race. Richland was a great race. It was one of those races that test your mental toughness and willingness to not give up. Alexa (Efraimson) is such a great competitor and I can’t wait to see how good she gets throughout the rest of her high school career. It is exciting to be running as well or better than I was running last season after the big setback of having mono last spring and early summer. I think I appreciate every race a little bit more now.

SB: With so much success over the past few seasons, what are your goals and expectations for your senior cross country season?

KK: My goal has always been, and continues to be, improving every season. High school running is an amazing way to open doors for oneself, but it is also not the most important thing I will ever do. I just want to keep getting faster, working harder, and enjoying every moment I spend running. If I improve from what I did last year I will be happy with my season.

SB: At this point in the season, what's a typical week of training look like for you?

KK: At this point in the season I am just starting to get tuned up for the championship season. Mostly though, I continue to maintain my mileage and weekly cycle of workouts. It’s all about consistency if you want to maintain fitness throughout the post season.

SB: Washington State has turned out some terrific female runners the past few years. What does it mean to you to be part of such a strong nucleus of talented runners?

KK: I have always believed that the great competition in Washington is one of my greatest assets. I know that I have to work hard every day if I want to continue finding success in this state because if I slack off for one day, there will be someone else in the state who worked really hard. It means so much to me to be a part of Washington and I take pride in coming from such a great state for distance runners.

SB: How did you get in to running?

KK: My family has always been involved in the running community in Spokane. I have always enjoyed doing cross country. When I was little, my parents didn’t pressure me to train hard, and I think that is part of the reason I love running so much; I chose it for myself.  I remember sitting at the state track meet when I was in elementary school and thinking that someday, I would want to be there.

SB: How is the college decision process going for you? What are you focusing on most when looking at which school you'll end up going to next fall?

KK: I have decided to go to the University of Washington. I made the decision because I felt I fit really well with the team, I really trust the coaches, and I feel I will be able to excel in academics there. I am very excited to have finally made a decision. Go Dawgs!

Fast Four (four quick questions, four quick responses)

SB:  Favorite TV show?

KK: I don’t really watch TV, but probably Gilmore Girls

SB: Shoes you train in?

KK: I wear both the Brooks Pure Flows and I just got the Adidas Tempos

SB: Favorite food?

KK: Banana pancakes with peanut butter

SB: Favorite band?

KK: The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
